Whole-Home Surge Protection
Most surges aren’t dramatic, which is exactly why a whole home surge protector earns its keep. Lightning gets the attention, and Southern Utah’s summer monsoon storms bring plenty of it, but smaller spikes happen all the time as the grid switches loads and as your own AC, water heater and appliances cycle on and off. Each one stresses the circuit boards that now sit inside nearly everything: thermostats, refrigerators, washers, furnaces, garage door openers and TVs. The damage adds up quietly until something fails.
A surge protective device mounted at your main panel diverts excess voltage to ground before it reaches your branch circuits. Paired with plug-in protectors for sensitive electronics, it gives the house layered protection. We check grounding and panel condition as part of every install. Surge protection is offered by our St. George and Hurricane electrical team only; Element’s other locations don’t provide electrical service.
Reasons to Add It
If any of these apply, a panel surge protector is worth considering.
Lightning nearby can send a surge through utility lines into your home.
Chargers, routers or appliance boards failing without a clear reason.
An AC or furnace control board is costly to replace after a surge.
New high-value equipment tied into your electrical system.
Brief dips and flickers when the weather turns or the grid switches.
Service upgrades are the natural time to add surge protection.

Surge protection, like all our electrical work, is offered in St. George, Hurricane and the surrounding Southern Utah area. Book through our St. George surge protection page. Element’s Flagstaff, Durango and Jackson locations don’t offer electrical services. That team can look over your panel and grounding during the same visit.
For sensitive electronics, yes. A whole-home device handles the large surges that come in from outside, while a quality plug-in protector catches smaller spikes generated inside the house and adds a second layer for computers and TVs. Together they cover far more than either one alone.
No device can promise that. A direct strike carries enormous energy. What a whole-home protector does well is handle the far more common surges from nearby strikes and grid switching that travel in on utility lines. That’s where most surge damage comes from.
Recent editions of the National Electrical Code call for surge protection when a home’s electrical service is installed or replaced. Older homes aren’t required to add one, but it’s a small addition next to the value of the equipment it protects. If you’re planning a panel upgrade, we’ll include it in the plan.
Yes. Each surge it absorbs uses up some of its capacity, and a big event can use up a lot at once. Most whole-home units have an indicator light that shows whether protection is still active. If yours is dark, or you’re not sure it’s ever been checked, we can test and replace it.
The device’s rating, whether your panel has a free pair of breaker slots or needs a breaker-style unit, and the condition of your grounding. A home that also wants point-of-use protectors for the AC or furnace adds those. We check the panel and grounding first, then give you a written, upfront price before anything is installed.
