Star Valley isn’t one town. It’s a 56-mile valley along the Salt River in Lincoln County, with a string of communities from Alpine and Etna in the north through Thayne, Star Valley Ranch and Afton to Smoot at the south end. Homes are spread across those towns and the ranch land between them, and plenty rely on their own wells and septic systems. We serve all of it.

Star Valley is part of our Jackson Hole and Star Valley service area. Our plumbers handle repairs and emergencies, water heaters, sewer and septic, and water treatment for wells and town systems alike. We’re available 24/7, and you approve the price before any work starts.

Local knowledge: Star Valley

A long valley of wells, ranches and cold winters

Star Valley runs about 56 miles along the Salt River, which flows north through the valley toward Palisades Reservoir. The valley floor sits between roughly 5,600 and 7,000 feet, and a ridge called the Narrows splits it in two: the Lower Valley to the north, with Alpine, Etna, Freedom, Thayne and Star Valley Ranch, and the Upper Valley to the south, with Afton, Auburn, Fairview, Grover, Osmond and Smoot. Settlers arrived in the late 1870s, and so many dairies opened that the valley was once nicknamed Little Switzerland.

Winters are long and cold. Afton averages January lows around 5 degrees and has dropped to 46 below. That cold reaches pipes in crawl spaces, barns, shops, well houses and exterior walls, and it puts heavy demand on water heaters for half the year. A tank or tankless unit sized for near-freezing supply water, and flushed before winter, is what keeps hot water reliable through the cold months.

Water sources vary across the valley. Afton’s town supply comes from the Intermittent Spring up Swift Creek, which famously cycles on and off every 12 to 18 minutes through much of the year. Many rural homes rely on private wells instead, and well water can bring hardness, iron, sediment or bacteria. Testing tells you which, and the right softener or filter takes care of it.

Homes that aren’t on a town sewer rely on septic systems. A healthy system needs periodic pumping and a drain field that isn’t driven over or flooded. Slow drains and gurgling throughout the house are early warnings worth acting on.

Distance is part of life here too. A service call might mean a drive from Alpine to Smoot, so we come stocked and aim to finish in one visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Star Valley towns do you serve?

All of them: Etna, Freedom, Thayne, Star Valley Ranch, Bedford, Afton, Auburn, Fairview, Grover, Osmond and Smoot, along with the rural homes between. We also have a page for Alpine at the north end of the valley. Call 24/7 and we’ll schedule you.

Is Star Valley a town?

No. Star Valley is the valley itself, mostly in Lincoln County, with a string of towns along the Salt River. Locals often use the name as if it were one community. When you call, just tell us which town or road you’re on.

How often should a septic tank be pumped?

Typically every few years, depending on the tank size and how many people live in the home. Signs you’re overdue include slow drains, gurgling and odors outdoors. If something seems wrong, we’ll inspect the line and tank and explain the repair. See septic repair.

Do you install water softeners for well water?

Yes. We test your water first, then size a softener for your hardness and household, adding iron or sediment filtration if the test calls for it. Softer water protects your water heater, fixtures and appliances, and makes cleaning easier. Read more about water softeners.

Is there a special on drain clearing?

Yes. Our $83 drain clearing or it’s free offer is valid across Star Valley. Mention it when you book, and if we can’t clear an accessible line, you don’t pay for it. If the camera shows a deeper problem, we’ll explain your options first.

*Offers cannot be combined with other promotions or applied to dispatch fees. No cash value. Must present offer at time of service. Call for details.
