Toilet Repair in Durango

The fixture you use most, back in working order

Most toilet trouble comes down to a few inexpensive parts: a flapper that no longer seals, a fill valve crusted with scale, a wax ring that gave up once the toilet started to rock. Durango’s hard water shortens the life of those parts, and a tank that trickles all night wastes more water than most people guess. On a well, it keeps the pump cycling. On septic, it sends a steady stream of extra water to the drain field.

We diagnose the real cause, then repair it with quality parts or, if the toilet is cracked, outdated or clogs constantly, install a new one on a sound flange with a fresh seal. A clog that keeps coming back may live past the toilet, in the drain line, which is where drain cleaning comes in. If water has been seeping at the base, we check the subfloor before anything is set back down.

Symptom Check

Toilet trouble worth a call

Most of these start small and cheap to fix. Left alone, a few can damage the floor.

  • Tank Refills on Its Own

A short hiss and refill when nobody flushed means water is slipping into the bowl.

  • Water Around the Base

Seepage at the floor points to a failed seal or a cracked bowl.

  • Toilet Rocks When You Sit

Movement breaks the seal and lets water reach the subfloor.

  • Weak or Double Flushes

Scale in the rim holes or a tired flush valve robs the flush of force.

  • Clogs Every Few Weeks

An old low-flow design or a problem in the line beyond the toilet.

  • Drips from the Tank Bolts

Corroded bolts and worn gaskets let water run down to the floor.

Toilet questions from Durango homeowners

Can a running toilet hurt my septic system?

It can. A toilet leaking into the bowl sends a steady trickle to the tank and drain field, day and night. Over months that extra water can push solids out of the tank and saturate the field, which is one of the costlier fixes on a rural property. A flapper or fill valve repair is small by comparison. See septic repair.

How can I tell if water is leaking into the bowl?

Add some food coloring to the tank water and leave the toilet alone for about 15 minutes. If color shows up in the bowl, the flapper or flush valve is leaking. You may also hear a brief refill when nobody has used the toilet. It’s a quick fix, and in hard-water homes the fill valve is often worth replacing at the same visit.

When does it make sense to replace a toilet?

When the bowl or tank is cracked, when it clogs no matter what you do, or when it’s an older model that uses far more water per flush than current designs. Replacing parts on a sound toilet is usually the cheaper route, and we’ll tell you plainly which side of that line yours is on. You see both prices before deciding.

What should I do if the toilet is overflowing?

Close the shutoff valve on the wall behind the toilet by turning it clockwise, or lift the float in the tank to stop the fill. Don’t flush again. If water keeps rising, or comes up in a tub or floor drain too, the main line may be blocked, and that calls for emergency plumbing right away.

Do you repair toilets outside Durango?

Yes. Our plumbers fix and install toilets in Bayfield, Hesperus, Ignacio, Pagosa Springs and across La Plata and Archuleta counties. Cabins and second homes that sit empty part of the year are part of the work too, and a slow leak is worth catching before you leave for the season.
