City Water Solutions
Your city disinfects water so it stays safe on the long trip through the mains, usually with chlorine or chloramine. That’s a good thing, but it leaves a taste and smell many people notice, and disinfection can form by-products that build up when supplies run low. On top of that, municipal water carries whatever hardness the source has, and older city and household pipes can add sediment or rust on the way to your tap.
A city water system starts at the main line. Carbon filtration takes out chlorine, chloramine and many by-products. Softening handles hardness, and a drinking-water system or UV stage can add another layer where you want it. We test first so you only pay for what your water needs. City water solutions are offered by our St. George and Jackson teams; elsewhere, see water filtration.
Symptom Check
None of these mean your water is unsafe, but each one can be treated.
A chlorine flavor you notice in water, coffee and tea.
Steam that carries a sharp disinfectant odor.
White deposits from hard municipal water on taps and glass.
Irritation after showering that can come from chlorine and hardness.
Discolored or gritty water after the city flushes or repairs lines.
Your family avoids the tap and buys bottles instead.

Seasonal checkups for every system in your home.
Seasonal checkups catch small problems before they become emergencies — and keep your systems running efficiently all year.
Our St. George team, serving Hurricane and nearby towns, and our Jackson team both design systems for municipal water. In Flagstaff and Durango, our plumbers install whole-home water filtration and softeners suited to local city supplies. Either way, the first step is a test of the water coming out of your own tap.
Meeting federal limits and tasting good are two different things. Chlorine and chloramine keep water safe in the pipes but affect taste and smell, and hardness causes scale regardless of safety. Some homeowners also prefer to reduce disinfection by-products further than the legal limits require. Filtration lets you decide.
Both are disinfectants cities use. Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia, which lasts longer in the mains but is harder to remove. Standard carbon handles chlorine well, while chloramine needs a catalytic carbon designed for it. Your water provider’s annual water quality report usually says which one it uses.
Yes. A point-of-use system at the kitchen sink treats drinking and cooking water only, and costs less than a whole-home system. Many people start there. If you also want chlorine-free showers and protection from scale, whole-home treatment is the next step. Our St. George team also installs reverse osmosis systems.
A properly sized system shouldn’t. We match filter size to your household’s peak demand, so running a shower and the dishwasher together still feels normal. If pressure slowly drops over months, that usually means the media is loaded and due for service, not that the system is undersized.
