We don’t recommend them. Caustic and acid drain cleaners work by generating heat and dissolving organic material, but they rarely clear a solid clog of hair, grease or a foreign object. The chemical then sits in the pipe, where it can soften plastic joints, eat at old metal pipe and kill the bacteria a septic system depends on. It also puts whoever clears the drain next at risk of a chemical splash.
Try a plunger first, or pull hair out of a tub or sink drain with a plastic drain tool. Boiling water can help a grease clog in a kitchen line with metal pipes. For prevention, use drain screens, keep grease out of the sink and run hot water after each use. If a clog keeps coming back, the cause is usually in the pipe itself and needs a camera to find.
Drain cleaning is offered at all four Element locations: Flagstaff, Durango, St. George & Hurricane and Jackson. Ask for our $83 drain clearing, or it’s free offer when you schedule.
